The Clothing Guide

What to wear for your family photo session

It’s a timeless image - mom forcing the kid into the pants he hates because she’s pleaded enough already and they’re running late for their family photo session.

Yup. I get it.

Choosing outfits for your family session can be a stressful thing, especially if it’s been left to the last minute.

This guide will provide you some relief and get your brain rolling ahead of time! No need to stress over something like a t-shirt :)

Painlessly plan your family session outfits in 5 steps:

Step 1: Be yourself!

  • I love capturing your authentic self. Choosing an outfit that you feel confident and comfortable in can make all the difference! The same goes for the kids - if your son doesn’t like to wear collared shirts, I promise there are lots of other options. Your family can look their best and still be true to their unique style.

Step 2: Plan ahead.

  • Because you’re here reading this guide, you’ve already completed Step 2—check!

  • Planning ahead can look like brainstorming in your kid’s closet, creating a Pinterest board with ideas, or even just deciding to have all the clothes cleaned and set out the night before.

Step 3: Mom, you come first.

  • This is your moment! Mom, let’s have you pick an outfit you love for yourself and then coordinate your family around you. I want you to feel amazing. Allow yourself to feel confident and comfortable.

  • Consider what feels like you. Do you like to wear dresses? Jewelry? If not, choose something else.

Step 4: Colors and Themes.

  • Creating a unified color scheme is a great way to enhance your family photos! It adds cohesion to the images and gives the impression that all of you belong together, which you do :)

  • It’s helpful to think of coordinating outfits rather than matching.

  • Choose colors that compliment each other. But I’m not asking for a sea of white t-shirts and blue jeans. And diversity in colors and patterns will add depth!

  • Staying away from graphics and florescent colors, like athletic shirts.

  • Layers can be fun! A scarf, headband, or hat may be your style, or a jacket, cardigan, or vest.

  • Consider the time of year and your location.

    • Fall: lots of options of colorful backdrops, including shades of orange, red, brown, and green. If your session is right in the middle of all the colors, perhaps lean towards more solid textures and colors.

    • Winter: your background could be white with shades of brown and creams. Be aware that more colorful clothing will stand out, and you can decide if that’s your vibe.

Step 5: Choose clothes that fit well and are in good condition.

  • Not too loose, not too tight, juuuust right :)

  • Dad, your shirt can make a big difference when it fits you well. I encourage wearing something that helps you feel comfortable and confident.

  • Kids need clothes that fit them just right, so make sure their clothes aren’t too short or too baggy.

  • Don’t forget shoes! Worn out shoes with a nice outfit won’t look quite as nice. Think about how the shoes will match or enhance the rest of the outfit.

BONUS! Step 6: Want to talk specifics? Just ask!

  • I love when you feel great during your family session, beginning with what you are wearing. Whoever your photographer is, I promise they feel the same way! If you have any questions about what to wear, just reach out and ask :)

Celebrate this season of your family with a family, newborn, maternity, or specialty session!
